2018 Vincent Massey Viking Hall of Fame class
2008 RMFL 12-Man Championship Team
The 2018 Viking football team holds a special spot in Viking football History. The 2008 team were the first team in Massey History to compete as a 12-man football team. In 2008 at the urging of the Vikings the RMFL was split into two divisions a 12-man and a 9-man division. Four teams played in the 12-man division the Neelin Spartans, Parkwest Outlaws, Crocus Plains Plainsmen and the Vikings. The Vikings had a tough start when they lost their starting quarterback James Winmill early in the first game of the year but the team came together for the rest of the year to capture the 12-man championship with a 7-0 win over the Neelin Spartans in the final.
The team was lead that year by a very staunch defense that included Viking Hall of Fame member T.J Simpson and an amazing offensive line that captured the team’s MVP honors (as a group) that year. The 2008 team marked the transition from 9-man to 12-man as the team then moved on to compete in the WHSFL the following year. This year also marked a change in Head Coaches as Mike Steeves took over for Kevin Grindey in 2009.
The team truly represented the core values of the program and should be recognized for the pioneers of 12-man football at Massey. The team set the standard for the 12-man teams that followed. Many of the players from that team are involved with coaching football in Brandon at both the youth and adult level. Congratulations to all members of the 2008 Viking football team.
